Decorah High School

National Honor Society

The objective of National Honor Society is to recognize students who have demonstrated achievement in the four areas of:

Character        Scholarship          Leadership         Service

Students eligible for selection (based on scholarship and having a GPA of 3.5 of above) must indicate their desire to be considered by submitting materials demonstrating their accomplishments in the three areas of character, leadership, and service.

Candidates will be considered based on the quality of their essays and evidence of character, leadership, and service.  Due to the fact that all four areas (character, scholarship, leadership, and service) are considered in the selection process, a top academic student may not be selected if any of the other areas are lacking.

While selection for membership in National Honor Society is a way for us to honor deserving students, it is also a responsibility.  Upon induction into NHS, selected students will be expected to participate in chapter activities – including meetings, service projects, etc., and to uphold the standards of character, scholarship, leadership, and service by which they were selected for induction.

Beginning of November:  Juniors and Seniors with a GPA of at least 3.5 receive letters notifying them of their eligibility for National Honor Society.

End of November:  Eligible Juniors and Seniors who choose to commit to involvement in NHS submit a student information form, reference form, and an essay to be reviewed by a five member faculty council.

November-December: Faculty council reviews student submissions and makes a determination student by student as to whether or not to offer membership.

Beginning of January: Students are notified via mail whether or not they have been selected for membership.  Selected students participate in an Induction Ceremony held in the high school auditorium, which is on Thursday, January 30th, 7:00 p.m.
