Vision: To develop in each student the awareness that a healthy and active lifestyle is essential to developing personal excellence, becoming a productive community member, and continuing his or her lifelong learning.

Yoga in the Classroom: Research shows that yoga (mindful movement) has many benefits, including flexibility, a calm mind, improved self-esteem, and increased focus. This project is about creating videos and posters teachers can use in the classroom to introduce students to yoga. Learn more here...

Cafeteria Coaching:
Cafeteria Coaching is a cafeteria-based program that uses middle school and high school students to model healthy behavior choices for their younger peers by encouraging kids to try new foods and eat nutritious school meals. Decorah MS has a group of 8th graders led by teacher Amy Pipho, which plans to offer taste tests monthly at Carrie Lee.

Cross-Age Teaching: The Farm to School: Cross Age Teaching program is where our high school youth provide education to other younger youth on the topic of local foods. Each month the high school team presents on a different local food item, teaching the 2nd graders about the food, how it’s grown, its nutrition benefits, and offer a taste test of that item. They incorporate physical activity into their lesson as well.

Super Tasters: A monthly K-1 classroom-based program, led by an AmeriCorps member, which encourages healthy choices and polite manners by incorporating new foods through taste testing and lessons.

Safe Routes to School

Walking School Bus: Daily route starting at corner of Broadway and Oak St. near Winneshiek County Public Health.

Bike Rodeo: Teaching students the knowledge and skills for becoming smart, safe bike riders and pedestrians, information that could one day save their life. Held annually for 3rd and 4th graders at Carrie Lee.

Bike Rack Challenge: Challenges the high school Industrial Tech class to create a bike rack for the school or another community location using as much recycled material as possible.

Mileage Club: Students earn foot token rewards by walking/running miles during PE.
