Welcome to Decorah Community School District.  My name is Mark Lane, and it is an honor and privilege to serve you as Superintendent of Schools.  The 2019-2020 school year is my first with Decorah CSD, and my 24th year working in public education.

My wife, Carla, and I are thrilled to be joining the Decorah community.  Our son, Calhoun (9) will be a fourth grader at Carrie Lee.  Our other son, William (18) will be a freshman at Iowa State University.  Our daughter, Savannah (21) will be a senior at the University of Iowa.  We also have two dogs, Ferris and Avett, who are enjoying the Decorah Dog Park and walks on area trails.

I look forward to working with Decorah CSD students, staff, families, and community members to ensure our school system serves each and every student.  Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or comments, and when the opportunity presents itself, please say hi, and introduce yourself.

About Us
Decorah is located in northeast Iowa, and is dedicated to providing instructional services to 1700 students from early childhood through twelfth grade.

Decorah Community Schools, like every public school district in Iowa, is governed by a board of directors. The board members are responsible for determining policies, setting the budget, and maintaining standards of excellence in education on behalf of the community. Decorah voters elect board members for four-year terms. Because the school board members are committed to their own lifelong learning, they are regular participants in training and board development opportunities through the Iowa Association of School Boards.

Educational Philosophy of the School District and Shareholders' Vision
The vision of the Decorah Community School District is to create a student-centered environment where:

individual needs are addressed;
cooperation and teamwork are valued;
competent professionals lead;
community partnerships flourish;
a commitment to excellence prevails;
and life-long learning continues.

Education is the responsibility of all residents of the Decorah Community. We believe in creating an environment that is student-centered, where individual needs are addressed, and students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.

We value cooperative teamwork among students, teachers, support staff, parents, administrators, and community. This begins with an attitude of openness and mutual respect, honest listening and expression, the flexibility to respond to change, and the ability to compromise. The strengths of each school and community member should be recognized and used to their fullest potential.

We believe that community resources should be maximized to meet student needs and professional development of school staff should be encouraged.  All citizens of the Decorah Community School system should have a commitment to excellence and a shared responsibility to support life-long learning.

This vision will be fulfilled through the achievement of the following student learning goals.

Decorah Community School District graduates will be:

Knowledgeable Individuals;
Effective Communicators;
Competent Thinkers and Information Processors;
Skillful Problem Solvers;
Collaborative Workers;
Resourceful Learners; and
Responsible Citizens.

Community Support
The community's support of our curricular and co-curricular programs contributes immensely to the success of our students. Together we strive to fulfill the District's vision for a "student centered environment where a commitment to excellence prevails."
